Own the agentic layer

The winners of the AI era will own the agentic layer.

Agentic AI will run day-to-day operations everywhere. On licensed SaaS that layer belongs to the vendor — their models, their schema, their credits, metered back to you by the token.

Ascend is governed inference that belongs to you — fully embedded in your VPC, your choice of models, your schema, your credits, metered to you by the token. The race for AI is already pushing frontier model prices down; owning inference is how that saving lands with you, instead of inside a vendor's margin.

+ How we calculate this

Keep metering: your monthly AI / inference spend over five years, with vendor packaging still rising 9% a year even as the race for AI drives frontier model prices down, plus 0%, 5% or 10% usage growth depending on your answer. Setup, training and integration overhead are left out, so this side is understated.

Own inference: a one-off platform stand-up at roughly 2.2× your annual spend (£50,000 minimum), then running costs of 18% of that build per year from year two. Running costs don't rise with usage the way vendor credits do.

The saving is one line minus the other; payback is the month the two lines cross. Every assumption leans against us.

Your data stays in your VPC. The layer belongs to you — fully embedded, your choice of models, your schema, your credits, metered to you by the token.

What winning requires

Three layers you must own end-to-end.

Own the product layer.

Agents can only execute against systems whose data structures, interfaces and workflows you control. Blaze builds that foundation — production-grade software you own, so the agentic layer has somewhere to stand.

Compound your agents.

Agents that don’t improve are a cost centre. Ensemble stores memory, versions prompts like code, and promotes what works — so agentic capability compounds under your ownership, not a vendor’s.

Govern inference.

Ascend attributes every token to the product, customer or workflow that consumed it; serves internal teams and your customers from one isolated layer; and leaves model choice swappable. Inference as a utility bill you control.

“Nothing off the shelf handles what we need. Aduro built our entire e-commerce platform, quoting engine, and configurable products with complex pricing models. Most of our revenue flows through what they've built.”

The premise

Four things nobody explains about the agentic layer.

1

Only two kinds of SaaS are worth buying.

Proprietary data you can’t get anywhere else, or capability you could never justify recreating. Everything else is software that almost fits — and now it meters the agentic layer back to you.

2

Vendors own three things you need.

The model they choose, the data in their schema, and the pricing when you buy credits on top of the licence. Premium agents that almost fit, on software that almost fits.

3

Owning inference means owning four levers.

The interface your users see, isolation of your data, model choice you can swap, and the pricing — your margins, your packaging, your terms. That is embedded AI under your control.

4

Three layers, end-to-end.

A product layer you own, agents that improve instead of reset, and governed multi-tenant inference. Partial ownership leaks the value; together they compound inside the business.
