Red Whale — hero

Working with Full Clarity — who led UX and interface design — Aduro engineered the member platform for Red Whale, one of the UK's leading medical education providers for primary care. Red Whale supports more than 30,000 clinicians each year with courses, Pearls, memberships and live events created and delivered by practising GPs. The platform replaces a fragmented legacy experience with one place to learn, log CPD and manage access — designed for the pace and pressure of general practice.

Courses & live events

One home for lifelong learning

Members land on a personalised welcome dashboard: CPD progress at a glance, upcoming live events, pick-up-where-you-left-off content, news and membership offers — with universal search across articles, courses, Pearls, GEMs, video bytes and events from the header.

Full Clarity's design language carries Red Whale's brand through the product — warm red accents, clear content-type labels, bookmarkable cards and a layout that scales from desktop study sessions to quick lookups on a phone between patients. Onboarding guides new and returning members through legal acceptance, notification preferences and profile setup, including migration paths for users with legacy Red Whale accounts.

Red Whale — Pearls article

Pearls, articles and clinical depth

Pearls are Red Whale's weekly written resources — practical summaries of evidence and guideline changes for consultations. Articles and Pearls open with rich hero imagery and structured body content: comparison tables, bullet lists and section headings that make complex primary care topics scannable in a few minutes.

Content is filterable by type and topic, bookmarkable for later, and printable with copyright-protected layouts suitable for personal reference. Members can search across the full library or browse by content type — from long-form articles through to shorter GEMs and video bytes.

Live events and on-demand courses

The events catalogue covers live webinars and face-to-face training — filterable by date and location, with featured event cards that surface what is coming up next. On-demand courses sit alongside live programming, with progress tracking so members can resume mid-module and see completion across their learning history.

Course and event pages carry the metadata clinicians need before booking: content descriptions, CPD relevance, accessibility and dietary preferences for in-person events, and clear paths to purchase or enrol through integrated basket and checkout flows — including subscription memberships such as Red Whale Unlimited.

CPD logging that reflects real learning

CPD is woven through the platform rather than bolted on. Members set CPD year, duration and hours goals in settings; the welcome dashboard shows progress against target. The CPD journal lets clinicians log participatory and planned activities, add reflections with scored feedback, filter and search their history, and export individual entries as PDF certificates for appraisal folders.

Completing eligible content can feed CPD entries automatically — reducing duplicate admin when learning and logging should be the same action. A profile checklist and onboarding actions nudge new members through first bookmarks, first CPD entry and platform orientation so value is immediate, not buried in menus.

Membership, mobile and secure access

Authenticated members access purchased and subscribed content through role-aware entitlements — with basket, voucher and subscription checkout supporting both one-off course purchases and ongoing membership packages. Native iOS and Android apps extend the same experience to mobile, with push notifications for new Pearls, event reminders and account updates.

Secure sign-in supports email registration alongside social login options, password recovery and session management suited to a professional audience handling sensitive account data. From Pearls and live webinars through to CPD certificates and unlimited membership, the platform is how Red Whale delivers lifelong learning for primary care — in the formats clinicians actually use.

Key Results

Primary care moves fast. GPs, nurses, pharmacists and the wider practice team need evidence and guidance they can trust — in formats that work between consultations, not only in a day-long course.

Red Whale has spent more than fifteen years turning CPD from a tick-box exercise into practical support for everyday practice. The member platform brings that learning together: written Pearls, on-demand courses, live webinars and face-to-face events — with CPD logging built in from the start.
